Refugees in Malaysia celebrate World Refugee Day

The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees or UNHCR launched the World Refugee Day
in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia's federal capital with the participation of refugees, asylum seekers and local celebrities.

Refugees from the Burmese, Sri Lankan Tamil and Somalian communities grabbed the opportunity to showcase their handicrafts, artifacts and food to visitors.
Refugee kids also danced and sang in their mother tongue as a way of embracing their culture and tradition.
Visitors got a chance to view a photography exhibition that captured various moments in the lives of refugees and experience the journey a refugee makes.
Besides the 94,000 registered refugees, there are close to 20,000 undocumented asylum seekers in Malaysia.
The biggest number of refugees come from Myanmar, followed by Sri Lanka, Somalia and Afghanistan.
The Malaysian government does not recognize the status of asylum seekers but those with UNHCR registration cards are allowed to do odd jobs in the country to sustain their families.
The exhibition is open to the public for two days.

Human rights organizations say that Malaysia must ratify the 1951 United Nations Refugee Convention to recognize the status of refugees and asylum seekers in the country. And they say that they would continue lobbying the government to do so.
