AMIRULHADI Zainal and Baddrol Bakhtiar's goals on either side of half-time gave Malaysia a comfortable 2-0 win over Myanmar in a friendly international at the Sultan Mohamed IV Stadium in Kota Baru yesterday.

National coach K. Rajagobal gave Kelantan midfielder Shakir Shaari his international debut while striker Abdul Hadi Yahya, who scored on his Malaysia debut against Hong Kong, started upfront alongside Baddrol.

With the match played on a water-logged pitch after heavy rain lashed Kota Baru, few chances were created although Myanmar twice threatened to score in the ninth and 24th minutes when goalkeeper Sharbinee Allawee Ramli failed to claim two low crosses.

Only the interceptions of right-back Helmi Remeli prevented the ball from falling to lurking Myanmar players at the far post.

Malaysia finally went ahead in the 28th minute after mistakes by Myanmar defenders saw the ball fall kindly to Amirulhadi Zainal in the box and the Selangor winger made no mistake with a low effort.

Helmi was again Malaysia's saviour when he deflected a goal-bound Myanmar shot wide in the 41st minute before Malaysia made it 2-0 10 minutes after the break.

Hadi floated a cross into the box which a Myanmar player deflected to Baddrol, who fired in a fine volley for his third international goal in 10 appearances.

Baddrol proceeded to squander two more chances as Malaysia dominated the second half as defender Aidil Zaquan Radzak suffered a worrying injury before rookie goalkeeper K. Sasikumar earned his first cap with two minutes remaining.

HCMC – The Vietnam U-23 squad earned a 5-0 victory over Myanmar’s U-23 team while Uzbekistan defeated Malaysia 3-1 in the opening games of the Vietnam Football Federation Cup, also called VFF Eximbank Cup 2011, on Wednesday at My Dinh National Stadium in Hanoi.

The Vietnamese side began the game with their strongest lineup and started the match on the front foot with a midfield of four featuring Thanh Luong, Van Binh, Hoang Thinh, Van Quyet and strikers Van Thang and Hoang Thien. Myanmar, led by new Swiss head coach Stefan Hansson, also began the game with their strongest players to try to lift the trophy.

The home side, though, were much stronger and it was no surprise when Thien broke the deadlock in the 33rd minute with a neat chip.

After the first goal, Myanmar’s defenders started to get nervous and Thien made it 2-0 with a fine strike from inside the box.

Luong was bought down in the penalty box by a Myanmar defender in the 45th minute and defender Ngoc Anh made no mistake from the spot giving Vietnam a healthy three-goal advantage at half-time.

German coach Falko Goetz made two changes at the break with midfielder Trong Hoang replacing Binh and striker Dinh Tung replacing Thang. The home side controlled the game and Luong added a fourth goal just three minutes into the second half.

Myanmar played aggressively in the last few minutes but they couldn’t hit the target and Luong finished the scoring with a minute to go.

In the earlier game, Uzbekistan earned victory over Malaysia thanks to goals from Otabek, Abduk and Oybek. Fandi hit a consolation for the Malaysians late on.

The U-23 teams of Vietnam, Myanmar, Uzbekistan, and Malaysia are competing in the annual tournament which is considered the final test for Vietnam, Myanmar and Malaysia before the Southeast Asian Games (SEA Games) in Indonesia next month.

The four teams are competing in a round-robin tournament, which will end in Hanoi on Sunday. The winners will pocket US$25,000 while the first and second runners-up will each win US$10,000 and US$5,000.

On Friday’s matches at My Dinh National Stadium are Malaysia vs. Myanmar at 5:10 p.m. and Vietnam vs. Uzbekistan at 7:15 p.m., while Myanmar will meet Uzbekistan at 5:10 p.m. and Vietnam will face Malaysia at 7:15 p.m. in the final games on Sunday.

FIFA to punish Burma over rioting thumbnail

Myanmar Football Federation chief Zaw Zaw appeals to fans to stop rioting (Reuters)

The world footballing body FIFA has ruled Oman winners of last week’s World Cup qualifying match in Rangoon, which was cancelled midway through the second half after Burmese fans pelted players with missiles.

FIFA is also preparing to penalise Burma for the fiasco, but details on precisely what measures it will take have not been released. The Myanmar Football Federation (MMF) is also yet to receive any official announcement from FIFA.

Oman will now progress into the next round, having led the game by two goals to nil at the time it was called off.

One coach and several players from the Oman team were injured by flying stones and water bottle during the rioting.

“[Projectiles] started landing near to where the Oman coaches were sitting so they panicked and ran onto the field – everything went from bad to worse,” a member of the crowd at the Thuwanna stadium told DVB on Thursday last week.

Soe Moe, information coordinator at the MMF, which is headed by business tycoon Zaw Zaw, said that “the dignity of Burma” was damaged by the fans’ behaviour.

“This is good for no one,” he said. “Now we have no more chances left as the game was forced to stop. It will only be damaging to us if we are to be banned [from holding international matches] for four, five or six years,” said Soe Moe.

“We will never get to see those top class teams playing in Burma. According to [FIFA] law, there is $US5000 fine for every object that lands on the field. Given that there were hundreds of thousands of objects landing in the field the other day, the MMF chairman will likely come home in a loincloth [Burmese expression for empty-handed].” [DVB]
